While the Police Files website and database are still being built out, here’s a sneak peak at some of the data it will feature. Below, you’ll find three spreadsheets: one with 426,838 California cops from every local police and county sheriff’s department in California, another with 57,259 California prison guards, and the last with 650 criminal California cops, those who have been convicted of a variety of crimes.
Feel free to download these files, if you think they might be useful to you, if you’ve never seen spreadsheets like these.
Thing is, overall, they’re of limited use. Working with massive Excel files with tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, of rows is a pain in the ass, difficult to search beyond simple keywords, and tedious to organize in ways that might reveal meaningful patterns.
And that’s why Police Files will become an invaluable tool for tracking police misconduct, when all of this data, and much more, is organized into an easy-to-use publicly accessible online database.
